“ช้างในห้อง” หมายถึง ปัญหาหรือเรื่องใหญ่ที่ทุกคนเห็นชัดเจนแต่เลือกที่จะเพิกเฉยหรือไม่พูดถึง แม้ว่าจะรู้สึกอึดอัดกับมันก็ตาม
ในระดับองค์กร ปรากฏการณ์นี้มักเกิดจากวัฒนธรรมที่ไม่เปิดเผยปัญหา หรือการขาดช่องทางสื่อสารที่ปลอดภัย หากผู้นำไม่กล้าหาญพอที่จะเปิดเผยปัญหาหรือไม่แสดงความพร้อมในการเปลี่ยนแปลง ปัญหาก็จะยังคงอยู่และอาจลุกลาม
ในสังคมไทย “ช้างในห้อง” นับวันยิ่งขยายใหญ่และยุ่งยากยิ่งกว่าในองค์กร มีปัญหาหลายด้านที่ยังไม่ถูกพูดถึงหรือจัดการ
ด้วยวัฒนธรรมแบบ “พูดไปสองไพเบี้ย นิ่งเสียตำลึงทอง”

“The elephant in the room” refers to a major problem or issue that everyone clearly sees, yet collectively chooses to ignore or avoid discussing—even though it creates discomfort.
At the organizational level, this phenomenon often stems from a culture that discourages openness or lacks safe communication channels. If leaders are not courageous enough to surface problems or demonstrate readiness for change, those problems will persist and may eventually escalate.
In Thai society, the “elephant in the room” has grown even larger and more complex than in organizations. Many deep-rooted issues remain unspoken and unresolved, reinforced by a cultural mindset of “better to stay silent than to speak up”—believing that silence is more valuable than honest expression.
